Stop surfing, make friends, Indian students told

One of India's top engineering schools has restricted Internet access in its hostels, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students' performance, making them reclusive and even suicidal.Authorities at the elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them."Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet," said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs."The old hostel culture of camaraderie and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion."IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their exacting curriculum, tough competition and reclusive campus lifestyle have taken a toll on students.Depression and dysfunctional lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. IIT-Mumbai has seen two suicides in two years and several attempts.Students have unlimited free Internet access in their hostel rooms to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.Starting Monday, Internet access will be barred between 11 p.m. and 12.30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbai's 13 hostels to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their "shells", Gopalan said."There has been a decline in academic performance and also participation in sporting, cultural and social activities has gone down," he said. But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated."Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby to go to sleep," said Rajiv, an electronics student who gave only one name.Student anger has also spilled on to several blogs run by IIT alumni where bloggers say "the birth of the virtual world had led to the death of the real selves", but add that they resent regulation of students' activities.Gopalan said authorities at the other IITs were considering a similar curb in their hostels.

Dear Friend,

After much thought, I have decided
to leave 'Thought & Humor'.

The reasons are many but they all boil
down to this: Nobody writes me anymore
so it must mean that they don't like me
or my college jokes, riddles, cartoons
or funny pictures:O(

I was hoping people would contact me
by posting a kind message in the
"comments" on my blog but few have.

Goodbye, Auf Wiedersehen, Au Revoir, Adiós
Howdy

P.S. All of you liberals can now be happy
because I am giving up. You have finally
won after 10 years of publishing...

P.P.S. The sad song playing on my blog
really fits my mood! You know I think
that I might have possibly visited your
site awhile back. Do you remember
or am I wrong?

I think society in general has become very anti social.. most people spend hours on the internet, or watching tv. I see it all the time.. niehbors who live next to eachother and never know eachothers name.. never attempting to go out and makes friends. I think the ones that are most annoyed by the regulations from the school are those that don't have alot of friends to go hang out with and are probably the most in need of it.

Does the internet make you sucidal?I don't think the internet in and of itself makes people that way.. but its not healthy to be alone all the time.. that is what makes people more sucidal.. not having alot of friends not feeling needed that sort of thing. Anyways just wanted to leave my 2 cents and get back to surfing the blogs while at work.

Great article. I hope it's true because it makes sense. I interact with a lot of high schoolers because I work at a church, and it's amazing to see how they can spend 7 hours updating a myspace page or texting other kids, but hardly any time actually face to face....

I think we thrive on actual contact...

... there was an awesome "experiment" done in medieval times, where a man wanted to see what would happen if his child never heard human speech, thinking that the child would learn an "angel-language." Yeah, it sounds crazy.

Well, the kid didn't learn an angel language--without human speech, the baby died, even though it got food, and other attention.

The moral of the story--we need ACTUAL people.

Internet is useful and it can be fun, but it is also an easy way for people to procrastinate and to escape when their non-virtual life is not going the way they want. It is not the only escape, but it is one of the few that is virtually free, accessible, socialy aceptable, and never shuts down. And once we do start spending too much time on the internet, our other life starts falling apart .. more guilt, more escape.

Speaking of which I should go do some work ...

I think the internet and things like myspace can in fact effect a child in a negative way....but obviously its an amazing helpful tool we all ahve come to need. And things like myspace and stuff like that may be the only place some kids feel excepted.
